Discover Jesus in Mark
Who is Jesus? Whether you are a skeptic, a self-identified sinner, or a seasoned saint, sooner or later you will have to answer this question. Jesus is the most recognized figure in history. But who is He, really?
The Gospel of Mark takes up this question by telling the greatest story ever told: the story of Jesus. Along the way, Mark offers glimpses of Jesus as Messiah, Teacher, Healer, and Prophet. Yet by the climax of the narrative, we encounter Him as the suffering Son of God, the only one able to tear down the wall of separation between Creator and creation, between heaven and earth.
As a community, we will enter into Mark’s story of Jesus to recapture a full vision of who He is so that we may reflect all of Jesus in all of life.

In one encounter, Jesus refers to a Syrophoenician woman as a “dog.” In the next, He heals a deaf man using fingers in his ears, spit, and touching his tongue. Both passages present beggars at the feet of Jesus, who come with nothing but leave with everything.

As we continue to follow Jesus toward the cross in the Gospel of Mark, He steadily reveals what it truly means to be His disciple. In this passage, we see that who Jesus is determines how we live. If Jesus is the Servant of all, then we are called to become servants as well.
Yet, even as Jesus speaks plainly, the disciples remain confused. Their hearts are still shaped by ideas of status, elitism, and exclusivity. Jesus must gently correct them, reshaping their vision and showing them what it truly means to follow Him.
